Mull and Iona Walks

Glen Clachaig, Isle of Mull
Whilst Iona’s small size and relatively gentle contours afford fairly easy hiking, on Mull your options range from family strolls through to seriously challenging, all day excursions. For those new to walking in the Scottish Highlands and Islands, it’s worth noting that changeable conditions and often boggy ground can make for tough going. On the upside, the scenery is truly spectacular and your chances of spotting wildlife such as eagles, otters, seals, dolphins, and deer, are high.
For detailed descriptions of all the best walks on Mull & Iona, visit the excellent Walk Highlands site. If you’d rather go on a guided walk there are lots of options, including Mull Magic, and Walk Mull. If you’re feeling really adventurous, Mull Man even offers an overnight stay in a cave!
Recommended Walks
Easy(‘ish)
Inivea, Cleared Village, Calgary Bay Starting at the car park at the north end of Calgary Beach, you follow the track along the north shore of the bay. Just before the old pier you take the path up the hill. Carry on through the gates and past the sheep pens, climbing about 75m above sea level up to the ruins. The fabulous views over Calgary Bay and out to the Treshnish Isles were once enjoyed by the actor David Tennant’s great-grandfather, who lived here in the 19th Century.
Moderate
Loch Ba, Knock Starting at the small car park in Knock, this flat track follows the southern shore of the loch. Loch Ba, which means ‘Loch of the Cattle’ is a great place to spot golden eagles soaring high above the peaty waters. You can extend your walk by either carrying on at the head of the loch into Glen Cannal, or take the track branching off into Glen Clachaig.
Challenging
The Fossil Tree and Burg The rugged hike out to Carsaig Arches and the climb to the summit of Ben More are both outstanding options, but the arduous walk out to the fossil tree at the western tip of Ardmeanach is our favourite. Steeped in history, this remote peninsula is home to some of Mull’s most fascinating geology and outstanding wildlife. Tide dependent and nearly 12 miles long, this remote track is suitable only for experienced and fit walkers with a good head for heights.
